NHS Fellow in Clinical AI, Cohort 4
I am a GP Specialty Registrar in the East Midlands and a graduate of Cohort 4 of the NHS Fellowship in Clinical AI. I am committed to driving digital transformation across the NHS to enhance productivity, improve patient experience, and enrich the clinical working environment.

The AI project goals are best thought of in two halves. The first half of the academic year was focused on the deployment of Harrison.ai CXR from ‘Shadow Mode’ to ‘Secondary Capture’. This functionality would then allow those with imaging access the ability to use this technology within their clinical work. To support a smooth launch of this AI tool in one of the busiest NHS Trusts in the country, I was instrumental in delivering teaching on how to use the programme, as well as creating interactive e-learning modules, hosting information evenings, and generating communications via staff newsletters. Additionally, another important hurdle before going live was writing the mandatory clinical safety paperwork. By applying the Clinical Safety Officer training from the NHS Fellowship, I was able to generate the necessary documentation to comply with DCB0160 and DCB0129 standards. The project goal within the second half of the academic year has focused on the necessary post market surveillance of Harrison.ai CXR. I created a feedback tool to allow clinicians to accurately record any cases that they wanted to report to the vendors for analysis. Furthermore, I evaluated the AI tool in two different ways. The first involved using Harrison.ai CXR to retrospectively review selected cases from Quality & Safety meetings, to assess whether the AI tool would have identified serious pathology previously missed by human reporters. In the second study, I collected and examined data on the impact the AI programme has had on clinicians’ decision making and how well the tool has integrated into their workflow. Looking further ahead, to support continued use of this AI technology at UHL, I am contributing to the business case required for approval before funding for Harrison.ai CXR expires.
My year in the NHS Fellowship in Clinical AI has been extremely rewarding for many reasons. Firstly, I have gained a wide range of valuable skills that will propel me into my future career as an AI-literate General Practitioner. For example, I have upskilled in the theory behind artificial intelligence and its applications in transforming digital health technologies. Through the Fellowship, I now understand the entirety of the AI life cycle, from design through to deployment and beyond. I have also had the privilege of working with incredible clinicians who are at the cutting edge of the digital AI space. From day one, the Faculty emphasised that the most powerful resource the Fellowship provides is networking and I could not agree more. The relationships that I have made, I believe, will flourish into future opportunities and open doors that would never have been accessible without the Fellowship. At times, when things did not go smoothly, it was arguably during these moments that I learnt the most, encouraging me to think laterally around problems. Additionally, I feel that my communication skills, particularly with key stakeholders, have improved greatly. I have been fortunate enough to gain exposure in managerial and leadership opportunities that are not typically available in clinical training. What I enjoyed most about the Fellowship was working closely with the team at University Hospitals of Leicester, especially with Miss Karishma Chandarana, who was also part of Cohort 4. We worked exceptionally well as a team, which resulted in the successful deployment of Harrison.ai CXR across the wider NHS Trust. It was incredibly exciting to be part of this pioneering launch, and I am proud to have played an instrumental role in putting Leicester firmly on the AI map.
